Week 4, Day 4: Describing People Copy Copy

Whether you are talking about your friends, family members, or characters from books and movies, being able to properly describe their physical traits is important. In this lesson, we will talk about vocabulary and sentence constructions related to describing people.

A key thing to remember is that, if somebody asks you “Comment est-elle /il,” please do not translate it as “how is he/she?” Instead, take it to mean “what’s she/he like?” That would be your cue to describe the person. Let’s begin!

Dialogue:

Sophie : Clara, devine quoi ! J’ai rencontré un garçon !

Sophie: Clara, guess what! I met a boy!

Clara : Ah ? Et comment est-il ?

Clara: Oh? And what’s he like?

Sophie : Il est très mignon ! Il est grand, avec des yeux bleus et il porte des lunettes.

Sophie: He is very cute! He is tall, with blue eyes, and he wears glasses.

Clara : Comment sont ses cheveux ? Châtains ou blonds ?

Clara: How is his hair? Brown or blond?

Sophie : Blonds, un peu longs et bouclés.

Sophie: Blond, a bit long and curly.

Clara : Ce garçon… il s’appelle Edouard, n’est-ce pas ?

Clara: This boy… his name is Edward, isn’t it?

Sophie : Oui, comment tu le sais ?

Sophie: Yes, how do you know?

Clara : Il est dans la classe de mon frère !

Clara: He is in my brother’s class!
