Second Group of Verbs

Now we will learn about the second group of regular verbs.

•  Verbs in the second group end with “- ir ” (example: Fin ir)However, not all verbs ending with “-ir” automatically belong to this group .

For instance, a verb like “depart” (to leave) is not from the second group - it is from the third group (irregular verbs category). Why? If you conjugate the verb with nous or vous, the ending will not be “issons / issez,” unlike verbs of the second group. (We end issons ). To sum up, only verbs ending in “ir” and conjugated “nous fin ssons ” are from the second group.

How do we conjugate the verb?

•  In the present tense, the rule is quite similar to that of the first group of verbs. The “-ir” is removed and the suitable suffix will be added depending on the pronoun, which precedes the verb.

Let's look at the verb  finir  (to finish in English)

Note that the suffix is in bold letters. The suffixes here apply to all verbs in second group.
