Where Am I? Asking for and Understanding Directions in French
With all of those place names you now have under your belt, asking for directions will be a piece of cake. The real challenge is understanding the directions given to you, so a large portion of these phrases will be used from the perspective of the person relaying information to you. I have underlined place names to indicate that it can be replaced with the place name of your choosing.
Asking:

Où est… (Where is…)
Excusez-moi, est-ce que vous pouvez me dire où est la bibliothèque, s’il vous
plait? (Excuse me, can you tell me where the library is, please? (formal))
Excuse-moi, est-ce que tu peux me dire où est la tour Eiffel, s’il te plait?
(Excuse me, can you tell me where the Eiffel Tower is, please? (casual))
Est-ce que vous savez comment aller au théâtre? (Do you know how to get to
the theater? (formal))
Est-ce que tu sais comment aller à la boite? (Do you know how to get to the
club? (casual))
Ou est-ce que je peux trouver le métro, s’il vous plait? (Where can I find the
metro, please? )
Comment est-ce que je fais pour aller au parc? (How can I make my way to
the park?)
Understanding Directions:

prendre (to take)
aller (to go )
marcher (to walk )
suivre (follow)

jusqu’à (until)
arriver à destination (to arrive at your destination)
à gauche (to the left)
à droite (to the right)
tout droit (straight)
le coin (the corner)
en face de (in front of)
à l’arrière (behind)
à côté de (next to)
près de (near to)
loin de (far from)
au bout de (at the end of)
au début de (at the beginning of)
au coin de la rue (around the corner)
au nord (to the north)
au sud (to the south)
à l’est (to the east)
à l’ouest (to the west)
la rue suivante (the next street)
le panneau stop (stop sign)
le feu de signalisation (traffic light)
Tournez à droite, marchez tout droit jusqu’à la rue suivante, et puis arrêtez au feu de signalisation. (Turn right, walk straight until the next street, and then stop at the traffic light)
C’est au nord. Prends le métro jusqu’à la gare du nord, tourne à gauche et suis le chemin. (It’s to the north. Take the train until the North Station, turn left and follow the pathway.)
