Today, we are going to learn about verbs and the general rules that are used to conjugate a regular verb into the present tense in French.
There are two types of regular verbs in French: the first type is verbs that end with “er,” and the second type is verbs that end with “ir.” Any other verbs are irregular, such as “être.”
Today, we will look at the first type of verb. To use this verb in the present tense, simply remove the “er” from the end of the word and add one of the suffixes from the table below. Make sure you use the correct suffix for the pronoun. We will use “jouer,” which means “to play,” as an example:
Listen to Week 1 Day 5 Track 1
Verb (infinitive) | Verb –er (radical) | Pronoun | Verb in present tense |
---|---|---|---|
jouer | jou | Je | joue |
jouer | jou | Tu | joues |
jouer | jou | Il | joue |
jouer | jou | Elle | joue |
jouer | jou | Nous | jouons |
jouer | jou | Vous | jouez |
jouer | jou | Ils | jouent |
jouer | jou | Elles | jouent |
Speaking Practice 1
Look at the last column. The suffix that is highlighted in bold in each row will apply to all verbs in the first group we looked at, verbs ending in “er.” It is important to note, however, that not every verb ending with “er” is part of this group of verbs, such as “aller.”
Listen to the dialogue and try to write down the conjugated form of the verbs “preparer,” which means “to prepare,” “manger,” which means “to eat,” and “aimer,” which means “to like or love” in the present tense.
