  • French

Let’s continue our lesson about the historical past tense. As the conjugation of this tense is relatively complex, we divide it into two lessons to ease the learning. This lesson will teach you how to recognize the conjugation of irregular verbs, and discuss some of the uses of this tense.

  • Let’s start with the conjugation. As we know from the previous lesson, the key point to recognizing the verb in historical past tense is to recognize its ending.
  • With irregular verbs, we usually encounter these two types of endings:

  •  The historical past tense is employed mainly in written novels, stories, and very formal documents of the past. Therefore, we will most likely see this tense used in the third person (singular or plural), and perhaps learning just the conjugation of these two grammatical forms of common verbs already helps your understanding.

Un petit résumé de la leçon

  • English

  • French

In this lesson, we talked about the conjugation of historical past tense for irregular verbs.

To conjugate, here are the most common irregular verb endings:

  • For verbs that end in –us: -us, -us, -ut, -ûmes, -ûtes, -urent
  • For verbs that end in –ins: -ins, -ins, -int, -înmes, -întes, -inrent
  • A tip for studying the historical past tense is to focus on the third person (singular or plural) since it is the most commonly used.
