French Verb Conjugation Course

Are the different verb tenses giving you a hard time? Are you too exhausted to memorize one more verb table and remember each and every rule and exception?

Most French learners consider verb conjugation as one of the biggest problem areas in learning French. But if you’re wondering if there’s a less difficult, less painful way to approach French verb conjugation in French, yes, there is.

It’s time to let go of the usual cumbersome method of memorizing each and every French verb form and all the rules that go with it. This course can help you develop a reflex for picking the correct verb form without any hesitation. Just like how native speakers do it.

In this French Verb Conjugation Course, you will learn 15 of the most useful French verbs and use them as a model to cover 80% of all French verbs.

How to use this course

You will find that this course is divided into two sections:

  • Part 1 is a review of the different verb tenses
  • Part 2 covers the Audio Drills and the different exercises.

For those who are not yet familiar with the usage and construction of the French verb tenses, I would suggest that you start with this section before proceeding to the audio drills. However, if you are already familiar with the grammar aspect of French verb conjugation and wish to focus on audio drills, you may proceed directly to Part 2 where you will find the audio drills.

You can go back to the lessons in Part 1 anytime you want to review the tenses or you can revisit it from time to time especially if there are some grammar points you wish to review before taking the exercises. Ideally though, I would recommend that you follow the sequence of the course for more effective results.

How to Use the Audio Drills in Part 2 of this Course

The drills make use of repetition exercises to build up your reflexes in forming the correct verb form naturally. By doing the drills, you will be able to develop an instinct to select the right verb form without any hesitation, just like any native speaker.

The verbs that you will be learning are selected based on the most useful in everyday conversations. You will then use it to model 80% of all the verbs in the French language.

Take note that only the most useful tenses are included in the drills. These are:

  • Passé composé
  • Imparfait
  • Conditional
  • French Future Tense
  • Future Perfect Tense
  • French Imperative
  • French Present Participle
  • French Subjunctive

Tenses that are barely used in actual speech such as passé simple and plus-que-parfait are not being focused on to prioritize the most important verbs and tenses used in daily speech.

Aside from the drills, you will also find several exercises to help you practice the verbs you’ve learned.

With the help of the Offline Materials, you can do these drills anywhere—while driving or on your commute, while doing household chores, or while you go out for a run. It’s easy to insert into your day— perfect for even the busiest French learners!

Advice on How to Use the Drills Effectively

Each drill is about five to six minutes long, very easy to follow, and narrated by a native French speaker (myself) to help you learn the correct pronunciation as it is spoken today.

The words are repeated with enough time in between for you to practice your pronunciation as well as your listening skills. By completely following the drills, you should be able to create a reflex and be able to choose the correct verb conjugations on instinct.

New! Now with Bonus Short Stories to Boost Learning

Learning the different conjugations of a verb is one thing. It is another thing to see the actual verb form being used in an actual sentence...or a short story. Learning this way will help you immediately put to use the conjugation you learned, making it easier to implement your learning in daily French conversations.

In the latest update to the French Verb Conjugation Course, each lesson covering a specific French verb now includes a bonus short story (15 short stories added!). The short stories make use of the verb you have learned in the lesson so you will be able to see its different conjugations as they are used in the story.

Each story also has an English translation and an embedded audio. Read the story first and at the bottom of the page, you may click to view the English translation so you could compare if your understanding of the French text matches that of the English translation.
