Learn and Master French Noun Genders

When asked what their trouble areas are, French learners would often say any of these three things: French pronunciation, tenses, and the gender of French words.

Ah the infamous French gender for words. Why do we have those rules  for words? Who plays heads or tails with each word and decides that a table (une table) is feminine and a book (“un livre”) is masculine. Makes no sense, right?

Tackle the Word Gender Issue the Right Way

Noun genders can be difficult at first, but with the right method, it can be mastered.

1. Understand the logic behind the gender (because thankfully, there is still a sort of logic/pattern behind the words)

2. Try to create some automatic reflex when it comes to choosing the gender.  The objective is to develop a reflex when you say the word in French.

Learn Noun Genders The Way The French Do

French people do not memorize the gender of words. They just see it, hear it everyday and whenever somebody says the wrong gender of a noun, people will automatically cringe and think “hey it does not seem right”.

Develop a “Melody” for the Word

Imagine a favorite song that you know the lyrics by heart. If the singer suddenly change the lyrics, it will feel off for you. This is the same idea for noun genders. You have to learn the “melody of a word” by associating the word with the gender automatically.

Through gender drills, you can use the same logic by doing the daily routine for 30 days. Spend 15 minutes per day associating a word with the right gender. No need to memorize the word itself.

Do the 600-Word Challenge

It may sound daunting but the Gender Drills will make it simple. By going through no more than 20 words each day, you will master the gender of 90% of the most common French nouns within 30 days!

Broken down into 30-day drill sessions, the drills will help you breeze through 600 words that account for 90% of common texts. Doesn’t seem so difficult now, does it?

Here’s How the Drills Work

  • check
Each day you will listen to 20 words several times. No memorization required at all. Just listen to it.
  • check

You will find 4 tracks (MP3) per day at a different speed.

    • Normal speed: “Un livre / Le livre”

    • slow (to let you repeat the word): Un livre….

    • Random:  Again there is a gap to repeat the word but in a different order.

    • Quiz: You’ll hear the word without the gender  (for example: “livre”) and you have to repeat with the right article (“un livre”) before will hear the correct answer.

You’ll be provided with a daily checklist of the words of the day. Use this to double check your knowledge. Also, the PDF has more than 600 pages. You can download the PDF on your e-reader or smartphone and just swipe the page like a flashcard

“I’ve lived in France for several years now and, despite the fact French people don’t normally mind mistakes relating to gender, I’m always looking to improve my French and avoid sounding too much like a foreigner. Gender and tense are often a struggle for me. After one month of using this eBook I must say that it works! Sure, sometimes I forget the gender of some words, the rate at which this happens is less and less each day. It wouldn’t hurt to have even a bit more content. There are a bit over 600 words but I would love to get the content up to 1000 or even 2000 words. This eBook became part of my routine as I listen the mp3s while preparing my breakfast – I’d like to continue it for a few more weeks.” - Anica Wijesekara

I was a bit skeptical at first but then I thought, “Hey, why not try this method”. I have been struggling with the gender of French nouns for a while. The sessions are short, and I was able to use the eBook both at home and in my car. So far, it seems to be working! I now correct myself when I use the wrong gender. Another positive effect is that I learned some new, useful words.

I don’t think this is the most useful tool for beginner learners. However, if you are like me and are at an intermediate level, you should consider purchasing this eBook if you want to solve the gender issue.

I like this approach (no memorization) and amazingly, it works! However, success requires discipline, and an app version with a reminder to study would be a great idea.
